How to convert a YouTube video to M4A

  1. Copy the video link from your browser’s address bar or from YouTube’s Share button.

What is M4A?

M4A is an audio file that usually contains AAC, a newer compression method than the one MP3 uses. At the same bitrate, AAC generally sounds a little cleaner than MP3, so you can often pick a lower bitrate and keep the same perceived quality.

M4A or MP3?

  • Choose M4A if you use an iPhone, iPad or Mac, or a modern Android phone or player. It is the native format of Apple’s apps.
  • Choose MP3 if you need the widest possible compatibility, for example with an older car stereo or a basic MP3 player.
  • File sizes are similar at the same bitrate: roughly 1 MB per minute at 128 kbps and 1.9 MB per minute at 256 kbps.

A note on quality

YouTube audio is already compressed, so no conversion can add detail that is not in the source. Pick the bitrate that suits your listening and storage, rather than assuming the highest number is always better.
